Hi Boriskaus, thanks for the comment. I haven't investigated the overhead. These were all small examples so a benchmark wouldn't be realistic.

I can't say what the best approach would be, but I would try maybe just defining the jl_function and calling it. I haven't touched this code in a while, so I don't remember the pitfalls, if any, of this approach.
